Dear friends I would like to inform you that on 8-12-2010 our president, Yannis Basdanis, gave an interview to the site ,
regarding our group ” Friends of the kalderimi of South Pelion” and its activities. Soon the interview will be
published on the site.

1.When was your group created and how did the idea come about?

It started as an idea by our Vice President Chris Wicks ( Chris and Kathryn Wicks  are a British retired couple who have a house and they also rent rooms,in Ranti-an area outside Platanias -) and it became real in November 2008 when we had the official foundation of our Society, and also the first registrations and elections which brought about 50 members as a beginning.

Today we have about 100 members.

We have a blog, where members write about the walks they organize.

We are supported only by the contributions of our members plus a small fund we may get from the local community.

2. What is the mission of your group?

Our mission is first of all to find and preserve, renovate and protect the “kalderimia” and the footpaths that people used to move from one place to the other.

We also have placed signs whereever necessary, we organize the cleaning and conservation of the paths and kalderimia because we see that as a way to preserve the history, the environment and to help in the increase of our tourism. Our Dream is to join the Kalderimia of South Pelion with the Kalderimia of the central Pelion and why not later the whole Pelion.

Another activity is the walks we arrange ( about 12 walks a year)

Once a year ( Apokries) we organize a masque dance at a local Ball room (The money that we collect is for the expenses of our Society.)

We also organize The Plant Bazaar one week before the Orthodox Easter (The money we collect is for the expenses of our Society.)

The new members pay 20 Euros (10 for subscription and 10 for the annual contribution)

Since you become a member then you pay only10 Euros per year for the annual contribution
3. The members of the group are only people who live in Pelion or foreigners also?

Most of our members are foreigners who live in Pelion , or they only come for holidays here and the rest are Greeks who live around in the area or in Volos.

4. How many hours does a typical walk last and what do you see on the way?

The average is 2- 3 hours. But there are walks that can last a little more and  I should mention that after each walk there is always a nice lunch at the local tavernas

where people taste the local foods and drinks.

5. Which is your favorite route?

There is no favourite route because every route here in South Pelion is very attractive and wherever you walk you admire the nature because it is a combination of mountain and sea. The views are magnificent, the vegetation is beautiful and any season has something interesting and fascinating to make you walk in the footpaths.

Personally I like the walk from Promyri to Platanias (about 2 hours )
