The Mystery Walk, Lafkos to Mikro

Hi Derek and Gill,

When you asked us if we could lead a walk today, it seemed the perfect opportunity to include the section of kalderimi found by Kiriakos that he, I and Mervyn worked on in the spring time. So we suggested the mystery walk. When you called in sick yesterday I might have thought you were perfectly well but had seen the grey skies and threat of rain. Indeed with the deeply grey skies at 10am this morning we wondered if anyone else would come. But come they did. 26 of us. A good representation of nationalities. Well represented were Greece, England, France and Germany and also from Bulgaria, Holland and New Zealand. Our youngest walker was Laura (19) from NZ, staying with Dina and Yiorgos having found them on WOOF, Worldwide Organisation of Organic Farming. Something like that anyway. In exchange for helping out in an organic garden they receive free food and accommodation, a great way to explore the world. There was some concern that we might encounter hunters on route but as we had two Wolf’s (from Germany) we felt quite safe, it was a bit of a woof woof – wolf wolf walk and it kept the hunters away!! We set out at 11am from Lafkos and headed off down the southern most (little used) Kalderimi that generally heads toward Milina. At the church of Agios Ioannis we headed south along the earth road crossing the river bed a few times. Then we took the westerly path along the river bed past two wells until we reached the newly reopened section of kalderimi heading towards Hondri Ammos. We followed this through dense forest receiving more lessons on mushrooms along the way. Then we picked up the earth road across the high plateau of olive groves and farms until we turned off onto the old footpath steeply descending the cliff to the Hondri Ammos – Mikro earth road. From here it was an easy stroll to Mikro, the last km being on the new asphalt road. An excellent meze lunch was enjoyed at Yannis taverna Mikro beach. A bit of community singing led by Yannis Katsinaris was better than ever as we had found and printed out the words of his favorite song so we could all join in. In response a few English songs were performed and the grand finale was Laura leading a few (anonymous) participants in a Maori HAKA!!! Was this a first for Mikro. The final happy 10 minute stroll to Platania was in lovely sunshine… Wonderful, oh and ‘perastica Mr Derek!’ (get well soon)… If you would like to learn the favourite song here are the words for you to learn for next time! Cheers Chris and Kathryn.

Denial On the secret seashore white like a dove we thirsted at noon; but the water was brackish. On the golden sand we wrote her name; but the sea-breeze blew and the writing vanished. With what spirit, what heart, what desire and passion we lived our life: a mistake! So we changed our life…
